from the book,
’swimming to Angola”
The Donkey Theory
One day, a farmer’s donkey fell into an abandoned well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.
Finally he decided that the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, so it just was not worth it to him to try to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They each grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.
Realizing what was happening, the donkey at first cried and wailed horribly. Then, a few shovelfuls later; he quieted down completely. The farmer peered down into the well, and was astounded by what he saw.
With every shovel full of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up on the new layer of dirt. As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon the donkey stepped up and over the edge of the well and trotted off, to the shock and astonishment of all the neighbors.
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to not let it bury you, but to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping-stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up!
Five Simple Rules
Free your heart from hatred.
Free your mind from worries.
Live simply.
Give more.
Expect less.

I finally signed up for Akismet and now I am no longer attracting 100-200 spam messages each day! It’s fantastic.
I told my nephew that it felt like the pharma industry had decided to use my site as it’s new ad venue.
So glad that’s o….ver.

After a difficult year on the planet Earth,
We are all happy to celebrate Julia’s birth.
On top of the new baby, our Mary’s engaged,
Bakers at college, and Bobby’s on his way,
Kris and Bill are blissfully wedded,
To Austin their shared kidlets are happily headed.
Haley’s the footwear entreprneur of her dreams,
And Cameron has splashed into the fun of his teens,
Nadia’s working on another degree
Mom and Dad are driving around- all of Nashville to see……
Billy was covered in all of the media,
when he dropped his blackberry in a sea of leavia.
Trevor and Sean and Hilary are doing their thing
the Farones are also doing it on a prayer and a wing-
We are lucky to be living through this amazing millenia.
So say cheers as we enter 2010…. Amenia !!!!

To William Boyd as he turns eighty
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of your birth,
I am writing this poem to admire your girth,
Of character, that is, and humor, and love,
You are the old man that I am thinking of,
You are the father that sang “Tell Me Why”
You are the Daddy that played monster, “Oh my!”
You are the man that displayed all the stuff
that men should be made of in case things got rough,
I am grateful to God that I had such a Father,
A guy who was solid, and strong just like our Mother.
On your 80th birthday, we can look back and say,
Life’s been terrific, exciting, and fun.
Who knew this all could happen when you were just one!!!
You’ve succeeded, and traveled, and met all the dares
Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy, without any cares.
I thank you immensely for being my Dad.
I am proud to have known you since you were a lad.
Happy 80th Birthday, and many more.

I know it’s an old concept, but it remains a good one.
If you get a chance to help someone, make the effort.
It will be appreciated and it will come back to you 100 fold.
Right now, everybody needs a little help, so why not pay it forward?
It will put a smile on everyone (including you).

Right now I am reading a fabulous book: Three Cups of Tea
.
It has totally captured me. It combines adventure travel, exotic culture, and
humanitarian initiative; three topics that I admire and aspire to.
If you have the same inclinations, this story will captivate.
